A fallen hero and Metropolitan Community College alumnus continues to inspire and help those following in his footsteps.
MCC’s annual Matt Mason Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Kevin Hardin, a second-year baseball player and graduate of Warrensburg High School.
“He demonstrated the importance of being successful on the baseball field and in the classroom,” said MCC Athletic Director Brian Bechtel.
Hardin hopes to move on to play for a four-year college or play for a major league team. But, like Mason, he is also considering a career in the military.
The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a player who displays the same passion and commitment that Mason had on the field and off.
Mason attended MCC-Maple Woods, where he played baseball. He went on to become a Navy SEAL. He died during a mission in Afghanistan in 2011.
Money for the scholarship comes from the annual Matt Mason Cowboy-Up! Triathlon at Smithville Lake. The money raised goes to several organizations, including MCC.
