It was once again a great turnout by Metropolitan Community College volunteers as they came out to serve and participate in an annual event honoring an MCC alum who gave his life in the line of duty.
The seventh Matt Mason Memorial Cowboy-Up! Triathlon took place at Smithville Lake on Sunday, August 5, with a contingent of MCC baseball players, Coach Marty Kilgore, Assistant Coach Ryan Cooper and Director of Athletics Brian Bechtel.
Bechtel says the MCC crew of 14 volunteered throughout the event, including helping with set-up.
The efforts honor, Matt Mason, who was onboard a U.S. military Chinook helicopter that was shot down in Afghanistan in August 2011.
Matt Mason, a right-fielder on the baseball diamond for the Maple Woods Monarchs (the team mascot before MCC became the Wolves this year), was a 1992 Kearney High School grad. Each year, the Monarchs baseball program selects a player for the Matt Mason Award, an honor given to those who display the same spirit of service and passion for life that Mason exemplified. The award comes with the scholarship, first awarded in 2013-14. The MCC Foundation, along with Mason’s friends and family, established the scholarship to keep Mason’s name alive and to honor his memory.
