Starting this fall, we’ll be the Metropolitan Community College Wolves. As for what the new mascot will look like — ferocious? cuddly? something in between? — that’s been a closely guarded secret.
But all will be revealed Monday, April 16, when each MCC campus will simultaneously unveil the winning mascot design and announce the winner of the design contest, who wins $100. The reveal parties start at 11:30 a.m. that day, with the unveiling at 11:55 a.m.
There will be refreshments and giveaways of MCC Wolves T-shirts. Plus, at noon, each Campus Store will begin selling those T-shirts and possibly other Wolves merchandise as well.
MCC will also be announcing new sports teams at the campus parties.
Here’s the location of each reveal party:
- MCC-Blue River: Campus Center near cafe (second floor)
- MCC-Business & Technology: Campus East Lobby near Testing Center
- MCC-Longview: Campus Life & Leadership office near cafe, Martin Campus Center
- MCC-Maple Woods: Student Center Commons
- MCC-Penn Valley: Campus Center lobby near Campus Store
Last fall, MCC invited proposals for the new mascot. The mascot selection committee — made up of students, faculty and staff — received dozens of mascot nominations and narrowed them to five finalists.
Voting was open most of November. “Wolves” was by far the favorite of the MCC students who voted.
In the spring of 2017, the College announced plans to consolidate memberships in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) from four campus memberships to one collegewide membership. This change, effective with the 2018-19 school year, means students at any campus can play for any MCC sports team regardless of that sport’s home campus.
Since MCC became a multi-campus system in 1969, it has not had a collegewide mascot. Instead, each campus except for Business & Technology had its own mascot.
The new mascot will represent the MCC sports teams as well as the institution as a whole.
