‘Not Your Grandma’s’ bingo April 19 helps A.J. Slater scholarship fund

The A.J. Slater scholarship committee, including Shelby Coxon (from left), David Owens, Paula Swope and Julianne Jacques, is busy collecting prizes for the April 19 fundraiser.

Here’s a fun way to donate to the A.J. Slater Memorial Scholarship Fund: “Not Your Grandma’s” bingo and a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at Hamburger Mary’s, 3700 Broadway.

For $10, you’ll be able to play 10 games of bingo.

The scholarship committee is hoping to raise $1,500 at the Hamburger Mary’s event, says Julianne Jacques, international student counselor at MCC-Penn Valley.

As of Feb. 23, $1,140 had been contributed to the fund, but a scholarship can’t be awarded until at least $10,000 is raised.

The scholarship fund, announced late last year, honors the legacy of A.J. Slater, MCC-Blue River’s Campus Life & Leadership coordinator for 11 years starting in 2005. Slater died Aug. 9, 2017. The scholarship in his name will recognize student advocates of the LGBTQ+ community.
