All for the Children family fun and resource fair April 8 at MCC-Blue River

A morning of fun at the All for the Children fair wraps up with an Easter egg hunt.

Metropolitan Community College-Blue River’s All for the Children family fun and resource fair, an event designed to celebrate childhood, will be Saturday, April 8, at the campus in Independence.

The sixth annual fair, which runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m., will feature all kinds of free, fun activities — including an egg hunt and the Easter Bunny — as well as information for adults on parenting and child development.

Among the activities (all free):

  • Dental screenings for children and — this year for the first time — adults, too, from Truman Medical Centers’ mobile dental unit
  • Laser tag from Main Event Entertainment and games from Cool Crest
  • Self-defense classes for kids from MCC-Blue River’s Public Safety Institute, which trains police officers and firefighters
  • Lots of costumed characters including fairies and princesses, plus face painting
  • Chances to win free movie passes and concessions from Blue Springs 8 Miller Theatres
  • Student art projects from Little Blue Elementary School in Independence
  • Informational booths from community agencies and MCC-Blue River student presentations on how to enhance human development and family functioning

Before the fair gets going that day, a 5K walk/jog starts at 8:30 a.m. from the Blue River campus. Entry fee is $20 through March 24; $25 after that; $17 for current MCC students. Sign up online and learn more at (there’s an additional 15 percent credit card fee for online registration). Proceeds fund the All for the Children fair. Contact for details.

All for the Children was the brainchild of Kimberly Glackin, an MCC-Blue River psychology instructor, but she says students are a major force in its planning.

“They have done the majority of the heavy lifting,” Glackin says. “This was definitely a large co-curricular student project.”

MCC-Blue River is at 20301 E. 78 Highway, Independence, MO 64057. The fair will be inside and outside the Arts & Sciences building.
