In order to ensure Metropolitan Community College students, employees and college patrons have a safe St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, March 17, a traffic and parking message from the MCC Police Department follows.
The 45th Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade flows on Broadway right by the MCC Administrative Center, the MCC offices at Broadway Plaza and the MCC-Penn Valley Health Science Institute. Also parade staging will be immediately next to the MCC-Penn Valley campus.
Staging of the parade on March 17 will begin at about 8:15 a.m. along Broadway from 31st to 33rd Streets and between Pennsylvania and Main Street on 33rd St. (Linwood Boulevard). The staging area will be closed from 8:15 a.m. until the end of the parade at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The parade itself will begin at 11 a.m. at the corner of 33rd (Linwood Boulevard) and Broadway and proceed South on Broadway to 43rd St for disbursement. Those streets will be closed beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the last float exits 43rd and Broadway. During the parade itself no traffic will be allowed on the route other than police, parade staff and emergency vehicles.
Because of the parade, MCC Police will have barricades up on the areas where parking is prohibited and during the parade, parking will be limited to students and employees only.
Specifically, only the west Pennsylvania entrance to the MCC-Penn Valley D Lot parking garage will be open. In order to access the Pennsylvania entrance, employees and students will need to drive east from Southwest Trafficway on 31st or 33rd Streets to Pennsylvania.
The Student Enrollment Center Lot will be accessible from 31st Street and the MCC-Penn Valley HSI building parking lots will be accessible by driving east from Southwest Trafficway on 34th or 35th Streets. Broadway Plaza will be accessible from the east (rear) entrance off of Central Street.
All parking lots at MCC-Penn Valley and HSI will be accessible during the parade. However, students and employees who drive and park at the college, but who have not already done so, are strongly encouraged to immediately obtain a parking decal and affix it to their car. The campus police department will be checking for MCC parking decals to ensure our students and employees have access to the parking lots. Parking decals can be obtained at no cost from the MCC-Penn Valley campus police office in CC102.
To help manage the flow of traffic, MCC requests that all employees have ID badges or car stickers in place. Please visit the MCC Police Department prior to March 17 to make a request.
