Six MCC-Blue River Trail Blazers sign to play soccer for four-year colleges

The Metropolitan Community College-Blue River men’s and women’s soccer teams have a lot to be proud of this spring. Six players have signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at four-year colleges.

At a ceremony Feb. 13, the players were all smiles as they signed their way into the future.

Here’s a look at the teammates, who are moving on at the end of the semester, and the colleges they will be attending:

Men’s Trail Blazers:

  • Nick Cooper, William Jewell College
  • Zion Hartzler,  Columbia College
  • Shon Hartzler,  Columbia College

Women’s Trail Blazers:

  • Brooke Howe, Missouri Western State University
  • Cali Fournier, Missouri Valley College
  • Sara Simpson, Missouri Valley College

“These six student-athletes are not only talented soccer players, but are people of high personal character.  They have dedicated themselves to becoming strong students, supportive teammates and superior athletes,” says Trail Blazers head coach David Owens.

Four of the signees are also recent National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVI honorees. In November 2016, Zion Hartzler, Howe, Fournier and Simpson were all named to the NJCAA First Team.

“The opportunities they have been given by four-year colleges are a result of their hard work inside the classroom and on the field of play,”  Owens says.  “Everyone associated with our athletic program is extremely proud of them.”
