Update, Jan. 13: This event was called off due to concerns about the weather. It has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, same time and location.
Kirk Nooks, Ed.D., president of MCC-Longview in Lee’s Summit, will be the guest speaker at a Martin Luther King musical tribute Saturday, Jan. 14.
The 13th annual event, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission of Missouri, will be at 6:30 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 5540 Wayne Ave. in Kansas City. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The theme of the musical tribute is “A Right Delayed Is a Right Denied: Championing for Justice for All.” Featured acts will include vocal ensemble Book of Gaia (Pamela Baskin-Watson, Nedra Dixon and Angela Hagenbach), the Max Groove Trio and the Paseo Academy Chamber Choir.
“Each January, the Martin Luther King Jr. legacy is emphasized in events around the nation,” Nooks says. “Growing up in Georgia, I would always watch the program at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and take comfort in the messages that were crafted in Dr. King’s honor. I am deeply humbled to play a role in this year’s Kansas City celebration.”
Nooks became president of MCC-Longview in July 2013.
