MLK Day of Service Jan. 16: More than a day off

Update, Jan. 13: Due to the forecast for inclement weather, all scheduled activities and events for Monday, Jan. 16, have been canceled. This includes Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service volunteer activities.

Each year, around 500 Metropolitan Community College students, faculty, staff and community members make it a “Day On” instead of a Day Off by celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of humanity and service.

Last year, some MCC students spent part of MLK Day helping out at animal shelters.

Each MCC campus will be hosting a number of community service projects as a special way to celebrate the day.

Elizabeth Montoya, an MCC-Penn Valley student, is planning to join MCC volunteers at Unleashed Pet Rescue & Adoption in Mission.

“I think it is a beautiful thing that we all come together as one MCC family because that represents who we are,” Montoya says. “We serve communities. We serve people.”

Unleashed president Danielle Reno says the shelter appreciates the college students’ time on MLK Day. “I have been a college student,” she says. “I know how busy they are, and it just warms your heart to have them come here and spend their day off with all the pets that don’t have homes.”
