MCC student veterans help out at event for homeless vets

stand down-scene-Thanks to those from the MCC-Penn Valley Student Veteran Group who volunteered at the Heart of America Stand Down Nov. 4 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

The Stand Down is a one-day event offering homeless veterans some of the resources they’ll need to begin rebuilding their lives, including health and medical services, VA benefits, substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational services, warm meals and clothing.

standown2Stand Down organizers say there are several hundred homeless veterans in the Kansas City area.

“You leave feeling like you’ve made a difference in your community and there is hope for these individuals,” says Melissa Meredith, student services specialist and student veteran organization adviser at MCC-Penn Valley.

Meredith said she worked at the event from 7 a.m. to noon, “and by the time I left we had served 350 veterans.”
