Two new members have joined the Metropolitan Community College Board of Trustees. They were sworn in at the board’s April 21 meeting.
Michael R. Brown is the new trustee representing MCC’s Subdistrict 6. Barbara A. Washington is the new trustee representing Subdistrict 3. The College’s governing board is made up of six community members each elected to six-year terms.
Brown works at the Grandview branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library as an access specialist II, a position with a focus on community programming. He also is the editor and publisher of Ghettostone Publications Co., an African-American comic book company. A former Missouri state representative, he served District 50 from 2005 to 2013.
Brown is an alumnus of MCC-Penn Valley, where he earned an associate in arts degree, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
He has been a member of organizations including the political club Freedom Inc., the UMKC Alumni Club, the Jackson County Housing Resources Commission and the Missouri Real Estate Commission.
Washington is managing attorney for the Washington Law Firm in Kansas City. She is a lifelong KC resident who attended Kansas City Public Schools. She is also a youth mentor and a former reporter.
She earned a bachelor of journalism degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia, a master of business administration from Avila University and a juris doctorate (law degree) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Washington is a member of organizations including Freedom Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Research Foundation Advisory Board, the Kansas City chapter of NAACP, the United Nations Association, the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus and the Association of Women Lawyers.
