100 Years, 100 Stories

Video: This is the story of Truman Medical Centers’ CEO, Charlie Shields.

Truman Medical Centers includes two acute-care hospitals and a behavioral health facility and is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient care in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The academic medical centers serve more than 100,000 patients every year.

Charlie Shields is the president and chief executive officer. His vision for TMC is to lead the way to a healthier Kansas City.

“First and foremost we are an academic medical center, we are a training center for tomorrow’s physicians, nurses and pharmacists and all kinds of folks,” explained Shields.

But before he started leading at Truman Medical Centers, Shields was an MCC student.

“At the time, it was important to me to keep my job. I wanted to stay local, so I went to MCC-Longview. I was amazed and what a great experience I had there. The teachers and how much they cared really stood out to me,” said Shields.

One teacher helped pave the way for his political career. Prior to TMC, Shields spent 20 years in the Missouri General Assembly and served as President pro-tem of the Missouri Senate.

“That teacher really got me interested and led me down a path I am not sure I would have gone otherwise,” said Shields.

After earning his Associate Degree from MCC, he went on to graduate from the University of Missouri where he received both a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and an M.B.A.
