The MCC-Penn Valley Men’s Basketball Team is now headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament. This is the seventh national appearance for the men’s basketball team in the last 13 years under the tenure of Coach Marcus Harvey.
The team won the Region XVI title for 2014-2015 and headed into the District XIII finals to play Northark Pioneers on March 7th. The MCC-Penn Valley Scouts went on to defeat the Northark Pioneers with a final score of 92-67.
Coach Marcus Harvey has been with Metropolitan Community College for 21 years. He has coached both the men’s and women’s teams. During that time, Coach Harvey has taken 12 teams to the national tournament and has 475 wins that span over the last two decades. “I am so proud. This group of young men deserve a spot in the national tournament, they have consistently portrayed perseverance, passion and have worked hard to play as a solid team,” said Coach Harvey.
Dr. Joe Seabrooks, MCC-Penn Valley’s President, shared his excitement: “We are proud of our team and the leadership of Coach Harvey. We look forward to cheering the Scouts on to victory at the National Tournament in a couple of weeks.”
The team will play in the NJCAA National Tournament in Danville, Illinois March 17-21. Other contenders for the national title include; Phoenix College, Genesee Community College, Kishwaukee College, Olive-Harvey College, Hesston College, Richard Bland College, Southeast Community College, Des Moines Area Community College, Lansing Community College, Schoolcraft College, Lakeland Community College, Essex County College, Newark, Community College of Baltimore County, Garrett College, and John Wood Community College.
Scouts earned 7th place at the national tournament on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Julius McCoy was placed on the 2015 All Tournament team. Congratulations to MCC-Penn Valley’s success!
