MCC Recognizes Gene Sands for his Dedication and Service


At the December 11th Board of Trustees meeting Gene Sands of Davis, Sands & Collins, P.C was recognized and thanked for his dedicated and distinguished service to Metropolitan Community College and the Board of Trustees. Sands, who has served as MCC’s general counsel since 1974, is retiring. The Board of Trustees approved a Commendation Resolution to congratulate Sands on 40 years of exemplary and historically significant service to MCC.

Sands provided critical legal guidance during the extensive expansion of MCC which included the construction of the Longview, Maple Woods, Blue River 021campuses and advised MCC on legal issues regarding the development of Business and Technology campus and the Penn Valley Health Science Institute. He also assisted in the successful effort to better the Public School and Education Employee Retirement Systems of Missouri which resulted in increased benefits for staff, faculty and administrators at MCC and throughout the state.

MCC Chancellor Mark James said, “It is an honor to recognize Gene Sands for his four decades of unwavering, faithful service as general counsel. Gene provided a sincere dedication to the success of MCC and this community. Through the myriad of legal issues with which institutions of higher education are involved with on a daily basis, he has served a prominent role in maintaining MCC’s institutional integrity.”

The Board presented a framed copy of the resolution to Sands to express their gratitude.  “GeneSands has demonstrated an innate ability to work simultaneously in the best interest of the college, its students and with the Board of Trustees to accomplish our mission: preparing students, serving communities and creating opportunities” said MCC Board President David Disney.

The MCC Foundation Board of Directors also honored Sands during their December meeting. Sands has served as general counsel for the Foundation since 1976.   The Foundation Board approved Sands as the latest Emeritus Director. The Emeritus Director status is an honor bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated distinguished and meritorious service to the MCC Foundation Board of Directors over a significant period of time. The prestigious title grants recipients a lifetime opportunity to serve on the Foundation Board. Sands join a select group of Emeritus Directors that includes Tom Brusnahan, Carl DiCapo, John Dillingham, Mary Hunkeler and Anita Maltbia.
