The Trail Blazer soccer season at Metropolitan Community College–Blue River is well under way. The regular season continues through mid-October, followed by NJCAA Region 16 tournaments.
“We’ve got a good collection of talent from around the area on both teams,” said athletic coordinator and head men’s coach David Owens. Both teams feature many great Missouri athletes. The men’s team also includes two players from Brazil and one from England.
Owens helped launch the soccer program at MCC-Blue River in 2007, as did women’s head coach Brad Childers. Both teams have strong records and have made many appearances at the regional tournament. The men’s team won the Region 16 championship in 2010, while the women earned that honor in 2011.
The schedules, available at athletics.mcckc.edu, match the Trail Blazers with Missouri and Kansas colleges and even take them to Illinois and Iowa. Most home games are held at Bingham Middle School’s soccer field in Independence, Mo.
“We’re impressed with the character of the student athletes and how hard they’re working,” Owens said. “We’d love to have local families and students come out and enjoy a game this fall.”
