Hundreds participate in Laura’s Run at MCC-Blue River

LaurasRunStartAbout 1,200 people hit the pavement on May 11 for the Laura’s Run 5K, which started and finished at MCC-Blue River.

The 5k run and walk was planned in memory of Laura Beth Reynolds to raise drunk driving awareness. Laura  was a 16-year-old honor student at Fort Osage High School in 2009 when she was hit and killed by a drunk driver on Halloween night.

“Laura’s Run was a refreshing success!” said Jessica Reynolds, Laura’s sister. “This event, with the help of MCC-Blue River and many other organizations, did exactly what was intended. The community got together, did something good, and reminded each other why we don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”LaurasRunFinish

Organizations such as MADD, the Independence Police and Fire Departments, Independence VIPS (volunteer police) and AMR Ambulance participated, providing drunk simulator goggles and driver safety information.

KMBC TV 9 covered the event.
