Shields joins MCC Foundation board

Charlie Shields smallCharlie Shields, chief operating officer of Truman Medical Center Lakewood and a former Missouri state legislator, has joined the board of directors of the MCC Foundation.

Shields’ appointment to the Foundation board was approved at the April 18 meeting of the MCC board of trustees. He will serve a three-year term.

Shields is an alumnus of Metropolitan Community College where he received his associate’s degree from MCC-Longview (then known as Longview Community College) in 1979. He went on to graduate from the University of Missouri where he received both a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an M.B.A. Shields’ connection to MCC extends to his family as well; his father served as an employee at MCC for over 30 years.

As COO at TMC Lakewood, Shields is responsible for engaging community organizations in the effort to build a healthy community. Prior to joining TMC in 2010, he worked for 17 years at Heartland Health in St. Joseph where he served as chief marketing and communications officer, among other leadership positions.

From 1990 to 2002, Shields served as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. In 2002, he was elected to the Missouri Senate where he served for eight years, including two years as president pro-tem.

In addition to his new role as a director on the MCC Foundation board, Shields is involved with a number of other community and state-wide organizations, including: the Missouri Higher Education Partnership, the Missouri Mental Health Foundation, the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council, the Mid-America Regional Council, 12 Blocks West and the Independence Chamber of Commerce.
