First recipients of Matt Mason Memorial Scholarship selected

In honor of former Monarch and U.S. Navy SEAL Matt Mason, MCC-Maple Woods awards a scholarship each year to two baseball players currently with the team.

The first recipients of the award are sophomore outfielders, roommates, and Missouri locals Ryan Cooper and Will Carter. The award is presented to players who not only exhibit athletic prowess on the field but who are also leaders and outstanding citizens off the field.

Ryan Cooper, who is also a catcher in addition to playing outfield, is from Owensville, Mo.

“Ryan is a very dedicated young man both on and off the field,” said assistant coach Justin Munson.

“He displays leadership qualities, and is the type of person that people follow because of his work ethic and dedication. Ryan is a very talented young man and with a bright future.”

Will Carter, roommate and fellow outfielder, is from St. Joseph, Mo.

“Will is a tough-nosed kid that always gives 110 percent all day, every day,” said Munson.

“He has a positive attitude, and leads both vocally and by example. Will dedicates every day to getting better and it shows on and off the field.”
