MCC-Penn Valley Scouts upset #1 team to advance in NJCAA tourney

The MCC-Penn Valley Scouts men’s basketball team has had a strong showing at this week’s National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II national championships, last night beating Louisburg College (NC), the number 1 team in the country.

The final score of the David-and-Goliath battle was 88-86. Penn Valley’s season record was 17-12; Louisburg’s record was 32-1.



The Scouts advance to the next round tomorrow, March 21, when they will take on Brown Mackie College at 6:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live on NJCAA webcast here:

The tournament is being played in Danville, Ill.

“The guys are excited and happy for the opportunity to play in the national championships,” said Marcus Harvey, MCC-Penn Valley athletic director. “We want to play and represent Penn Valley and Kansas City well.”

The Scouts have gone to the national tournament 12 times, winning the national championship once, in the 1995-96 season. At the regional level, the team has earned the championship title 12 times and has been runner-up nine times.

The NJCAA, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, consists of two-year colleges and other accredited institutions. NJCAA sports include: baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, half marathon, ice hockey, indoor track and field, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
