MCC-Longview Debate Team is riding high after two successful weekend debate tournaments.
Coach John Mikolajcik took the debate team to the Gorlok Gala at Webster University in St. Louis January 25-27 and the Border Wars Swing, which they co-hosted with Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kansas last weekend.
At the Gorlok Gala, the team won second place overall in Community College Sweepstakes out of seven community colleges in attendance. Stephanie Weiss placed 12th out of 104 people in Impromptu Speaking, with fellow debater Danny McQuarters placing 20th. McQuarters and Yvonne Hall advanced to semi-finals of the Novice Division.
The team continued their success at last weekend’s Border Wars Swing. Even though they did not compete in the second day’s events due to co-hosting duties, their points from the first day were enough to secure overall debate tournament champions and second place individual events. A highlight of the competition was McQuarters’ third place award in Iron Man, which is awarded to students who compete in both Parliamentary Debate and Lincoln Douglas debate and given to the top four students.
Next up for the debate team is the Missouri Association of Forensics Activities State Championship Tournament February 15-16 at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. Coach Mikolajcik says, “The past two weekends have been a great success for the team and we are looking to build on that as we head into preparation for state.”
Congratulations, MCC-Longview Debate Team and good luck at state!
