MCC-Penn Valley Spreads Holiday Cheer through Giving

MCC-Penn Valley Campus Bookstore Employees with Gillis Toy Donations

With the holiday season in full swing and the winter break drawing nearer, members of the MCC Penn-Valley community are doing  their part to make the holiday season a nice one for those who need it most:

Criminal Justice Association 6th Annual Toy Drive

Project Kidz

The Criminal Justice Association, under leadership of Social Sciences Department Chair Dr. Karen Curls, is collecting toys for Project Kidz, an organization that donates toys to incarcerated mothers at the Jackson County Detention Center.  The mothers will be able to give the gifts to their children when they visit during the holiday season.  Brand new, unwrapped toys and books suitable for children age 0-19 can be dropped off in the Social Science Division Office until Wednesday, December 21 when they will be delivered to the Jackson County Detention Center.  The Criminal Justice Association appreciates all support and looks forward to continuing this gift-giving opportunity next year.

MCC-Penn Valley Bookstore Toy Drive

Gillis Organization

Selin Gaona and the employees of the bookstore ran a four-week toy drive collecting toys for boys from Gillis, an organization in Kansas City that helps families become stable and self-sufficient through counseling and other social services.  The Penn Valley bookstore adopted 10 boys and collected money and toy donations to fulfill three needs and three wants of each boy, ages 10-16. Thanks to the efforts of the bookstore employees, who raised $500 in monetary and toy donations, all  but one of the boys’ wishes were fulfilled.  They collected money in a jar at the store cash register and the bookstore employees and others around campus also contributed to the toy drive.  This is the first year of the Penn Valley bookstore fundraiser for Gillis and hopefully there will be many more to come!
