Classroom Lessons Connect to Real Life

Little did Keet Kopecky’s students at MCC-Longview know that “pick up trash” listed on the syllabus was an actual assignment.

Each year Kopecky’s service learning biology class joins “Project Blue River Rescue” to clean up trash from the river. Last Saturday they gathered with other like-minded groups to rid Blue River of refuse that is both unsightly and harmful to the ecosystem of the river.

This year the class also removed brush honeysuckle, an invasive plant species, along Swope Parkway in Kansas City, Mo.

Local television station KCTV-5 covered the story on their website.
