MCC-Penn Valley’s Women’s Basketball Team Gave Back

Women's Basketball Team with Bridge Leadership Academy Participants

At the end of 2011 in the midst of the holiday season, some people or groups went beyond the call of duty to be a blessing to others when they least expected it, including some of MCC-Penn Valley’s very own.  Wakisha Briggs, head coach of the MCC-Penn Valley Lady Scouts, and Thandi Powell, owner of Thandi’s Eyelashes and Brow, donated 25 holiday gift baskets to students attending the Bridge Leadership Academy workshops.

“I was pleased when Thandi contacted me about donating gifts to the students in my leadership program,” said Briggs, who also serves as the CEO of Bridge Leadership Academy.

In addition to distributing Christmas baskets to the students, the women’s basketball team assisted the students with completing their vision boards displaying their life aspirations in a vibrant, artistic format.

Coach Briggs also brought in a surprise guest to speak to the kids – WNBA Connecticut Sun superstar and former Kansas Jayhawk, Danielle McCray.  According to Briggs, McCray jumped at the opportunity to speak to the students, letting them know it took hard work, discipline, studying in school and avoiding trouble for her to make it to the WNBA.

Powell and  Briggs  thank the many people and organizations that made these gifts and baskets possible: Open Door Ministries, Superior Buick-Cadillac, Through Our Children’s Lives, faithful clients of Thandi’s Eyelashes and Brow, and to Danielle McCray for donating her time and providing dinner for the students.
